The Howard H. Baker Jr. School of Public Policy and Public Affairs recognized excellence in academics, teaching, leadership and service during its inaugural Baker Awards ceremony on May 14.
The event brought together students, faculty and staff to celebrate individuals whose work reflects the Baker School’s mission of preparing skilled public problem solvers. The awards were created as the school expands its academic programs, faculty and student community.
Ashley Watermeier, a public affairs and political science dual major, was recognized as the first recipient of the Jimmy and Illeen Cheek Outstanding Senior Award, honoring a rising senior demonstrating exceptional academic achievement, leadership, service and engagement.

The Baker School also honored seven graduate students with Academic Excellence Awards for completing their programs with a perfect 4.0 GPA: Madison Lackey and Makaela Webb from the Master of Public Policy program; Julia Swart, Julia Briggs and Annie Hamby from the Master of Public Administration program; and Chase Watts and Kaitlyn Bare from the Master of Public Administration online program.
Excellence in teaching was recognized through awards honoring faculty members for their impact in the classroom and commitment to student success. Dr. Jessica Sargent received the Undergraduate Excellence in Teaching Award, while Dr. Jack Mewhirter received the Graduate Excellence in Teaching Award.
The Dean’s Service Award was presented to Human Resources and Financial Specialist Gina Hale and Institute of American Civics Executive Assistant Teresa Finchum for exceptional service and behind-the-scenes contributions supporting the daily operations and continued growth of the Baker School.
“The Baker Awards reflect the culture we are building at the Baker School, one that values excellence, service and investment in one another,” said Dean Marianne Wanamaker. “Our people are our greatest assets, so it is important to recognize the people whose contributions strengthen our community.”
