Celebrating Howard H. Baker Jr.’s 100th Birthday

Celebrating Howard H. Baker Jr.’s 100th Birthday

November 5, 2025

November 5, 2025

This November, the Howard H. Baker Jr. School of Public Policy and Public Affairs will host a series of commemorative events honoring the centennial of Senator Howard H. Baker Jr.’s birth. The celebrations will pay tribute to the remarkable life and legacy of the Tennessee statesman, renowned for his bipartisanship, diplomacy, and leadership.

The celebration begins with the Howard H. Baker Jr. Photography Exhibit at the Knoxville Museum of Art. The exhibit, open from October 24 through December 14, features 11 student photographers selected to showcase their work alongside Baker’s own photographs. Each student’s submission highlights one of four contest themes inspired by Baker’s life and values. The exhibit invites the community to see the world through the lens of service and perspective. These are two qualities Baker carried throughout his career.

On Thursday, November 13, the Baker School will host a panel discussion titled “U.S. and Japan: Allies in Security, Partners in Economic Prosperity.” The event runs from 1 to 2 p.m. and focuses on the enduring partnership between the United States and Japan. The topic connects directly to Baker’s legacy as U.S. Ambassador to Japan, offering insight into how his diplomatic leadership continues to shape global cooperation today.

The following evening, Friday, November 14, the Baker School community will gather for the Baker 100 Gala, a formal event celebrating Baker’s centennial year. The evening will feature remarks from special guests, including Senator Lamar Alexander and Heath Shuler, and the presentation of the inaugural Howard H. Baker Jr. Award for Public Service. This award honors an individual who exemplifies the same spirit of integrity, civility, and dedication to bipartisan leadership that defined Baker’s career.

The week concludes on Saturday, November 15, with a Baker Homecoming Tailgate from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. before the UT Homecoming football game versus New Mexico State. The event will bring together students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community partners to celebrate Baker’s birthday while enjoying delicious food.

The commemorative events connect the past to the present and inspires the next generation of public service leaders. Whether through art, conversation, celebration, or community, the Baker School is honoring Senator Baker’s legacy by continuing to foster dialogue, civility, and a shared commitment to making a positive impact.
