Inspiring Civic Engagement: Baker Ambassador Alexis Barton
As a public affairs student at the Howard H. Baker Jr. School of Public Policy and Public Affairs, Alexis Barton is passionate about making meaningful change through government and policy. Her experience in government has grown beyond the four walls of the Baker School and has shaped her understanding of how civic engagement impacts real lives. This past summer, Barton worked as a student assistant for Dr. Frankie Weaver, educational outreach program manager in the Institute of American Civics., In that role Barton helped to lead the Knox County Capstone Program for 16 upperclassmen high school students and assisted in planning the Annual Teachers Civics Academy. These experiences deepened her interest in civic education and student outreach, reinforcing her commitment to inspiring others to become engaged citizens. At the same time, Barton served as a political intern with Baker Strategy Group, a Nashville-based political consulting firm, where she conducted East Tennessee outreach and communicated with local officials about upcoming elections.
Earlier in her academic journey, Barton gained hands-on political experience by canvassing for the Knox County Mayor’s race and serving as a clerical intern with the East Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals while in high school.
As a Baker Ambassador, she now channels these broad experiences into helping fellow students find their own path in public service, whether through policy, outreach, or advocacy, continuing to bridge what she learns in the classroom with her growing professional experience in government.
