At the Howard H. Baker Jr. School of Public Policy and Public Affairs, student leadership takes form in many ways. One of which is through the Baker School Student Association (BSSA). By organizing civic engagement events and building connections across programs, BSSA gives students a platform to shape their Baker experience and strengthen the school community.

Its members take pride in upholding the values of civility, integrity, and public service, making these principles the foundation of their work, ranging from event planning, fostering connections, and more.

Building Community and Connections

BSSA hosts bi-weekly meetings that blend community building with professional development. President Makayla Paris shares, “BSSA is a fun way to get involved at the Baker School, our meetings are meant to not only encourage engagement with policy topics, but with each other in a more relaxed and open environment.” Some gatherings are lighthearted and fun, while others provide opportunities to network with local and state political officials over dinner. Together, these meetings reflect the organization’s goal of cultivating both meaningful connections and valuable professional skills. Junior Baker School student Ashley Watermeier appreciates the combination of the two meeting styles: “You don’t feel as intimidated during professional events because you’ve already built social connections with the people attending.”

Preparing Students for Public Service

One of BSSA’s central goals is to better equip its members to handle a career in public service. The organization provides opportunities that help students develop both professional and personal skills essential for success in policy-related fields. Through professionalism workshops, committee and leadership roles, and mentorship from Baker faculty and staff, members gain hands-on experience that complements their academic learning. The BSSA team also seeks out tailored career development opportunities throughout the year, ensuring that every student has access to experiences that align with their goals.

Meet the Team Behind the Mission

The BSSA is led by a group of dedicated students who represent the diversity of interests and passions within the Baker School. Officers collaborate to plan events, lead committees, and create a welcoming space for all Baker students. Whether they’re managing communications, coordinating outreach, or developing new initiatives, each member plays a vital role in making the organization thrive.

This year’s executive board includes President Makayla Paris, Vice President Heather Taylor, Secretary Jackson Brannon, Communications Director Eli Hicks, Treasurer Kripa Patel, and Recruitment Officer Nathan Shroeder. Together, they work closely with Baker School faculty and staff to ensure that student voices are represented and that every program and event reflects the values of the school.

How to Get Involved

BSSA welcomes all UT students who want to build leadership skills, connect with peers, and make a positive impact within the UT and Baker community. Students can attend open meetings, join committees, or run for leadership positions during annual elections. Whether you’re new to the Baker School, exploring what it has to offer, or looking to deepen your involvement, there’s always an opportunity to contribute and grow.

Looking Ahead

The Baker School continues to expand programs and opportunities for students, and the BSSA remains at the heart of its student experience. “As BSSA grows, I hope it continues to keep the same welcoming atmosphere,” said Alex Durkee. “It’s student driven, which makes it feel more relaxed and creates a great space to meet and connect with others comfortably.” The organization continues to embody Senator Baker’s vision of a generation prepared to serve with civility and integrity.
