The Baker Living & Learning Community: Where Leadership Meets Service

The Baker Living & Learning Community: Where Leadership Meets Service

December 2, 2025

December 3, 2025

The Baker Living & Learning Community (BLLC) is more than a place to live. It’s a community where curiosity and purpose thrive. Located in Clement Hall, the BLLC brings together students who are eager to explore public affairs, build connections, and make an impact.

Designed for first-year students interested in leadership, government, and service, the program blends academic learning, mentoring, and civic engagement. Students quickly learn how to turn ideas into action, building a foundation for success in college and beyond.

From their first days on campus, BLLC students take part in experiences that challenge and inspire them. “One of the unique features of the Baker LLC are the events we participate in outside of the classroom,” says Advising Coordinator Erik Simons, who also serves as the staff liaison to the BLLC. “Students are exposed to non-profit organizations while participating in a service project, or they learn about economic development while touring local attractions. These events help students picture themselves in potential careers in non-profit leadership, local government, and more.”

The residential program offers access to guest speakers, networking events with policymakers, and Baker School activities. Whether it’s discussing current issues in small groups or engaging in hands-on community initiatives, students continually find themselves surrounded by people who want to make a difference.

One of the defining features of the BLLC is its emphasis on collaboration. Residents participate in projects that tie directly to civic life and leadership development, often helping students discover new academic interests or shape their future career goals.

“The option to join the BLLC was enticing because of the chance to live and learn amongst like-minded, passionate people,” said Kate Wyman. “As a Public Affairs major, it is crucial that we partake in meaningful discussions about current events and topics covered in class. The BLLC gives us an easy and convenient way to communicate and study; all we need to do is walk across the hall or head to the study room.”

Beyond academics, the BLLC encourages students to get involved across campus and in the Knoxville community by volunteering with local organizations and attending leadership workshops. These experiences align with the mission of the Baker School, which is to educate and inspire the next generation of leaders dedicated to civic engagement.

For many, the BLLC is just the beginning of their journey with the Baker School. The connections, mentorship, and experiences gained during the first year often lead students to continued involvement through research opportunities, internships, and participation in the Baker School Student Association.

In a campus filled with opportunities, the BLLC stands out as a place where students learn to lead with purpose, serve with integrity, and live the legacy of Senator Howard H. Baker Jr.
