Baker Mentoring Program

Baker Mentoring Program

Baker Mentoring Program

The Baker Mentoring Program pairs undergraduate students with Baker alumni and friends working in the fields of government, law, and public policy. The year-long program is designed to help students with career exploration, professional development, and networking.

FAQs for Students

What are the program eligibility requirements?

You must be a current Baker School student. Sophomores through Seniors are eligible to apply.

How does the matching process work?

The Baker School Student Success team will review all mentor and mentee applications. Based on the questions in each application, we will pair mentees with mentors who have the most in common or share similar interests.

What can I expect from my mentor?

All mentors are expected to:

  • Advise their mentees on their college journey and post-graduate plans.
  • Be open to answering questions their mentees ask them.
  • Create a meeting schedule with their mentee that works for both parties.
  • Meet with their mentees at least twice a semester. Virtual meetings or phone calls are perfectly acceptable and most likely the only option for many people.

Attempt to establish a connection with their mentees that extends beyond the official one-year mentorship.

What is the time commitment?

Mentors and mentees should meet twice a semester, at minimum. Meetings can be over the phone, via Zoom/Teams, or in person.

Is there a chance I will not be paired with a mentor?

While we cannot guarantee that your mentor will work in your exact field of interest, we will work diligently to recruit mentors to ensure every student has a match.

FAQs for Mentors

How does the matching process work?

The Baker School Student Success team will review all mentor and mentee applications. Based on the matching questions in each application, we will pair mentees with mentors who have the most in common or share similar interests.

What is the time commitment?

Mentors and mentees should meet twice a semester, at minimum. Meetings can be over the phone, via Zoom/Teams, or in person.

What can I expect from my mentee?

Mentees complete a virtual training on professionalism and expectations before the matching process, so expect them to create a semesterly meeting schedule that works for both parties, come prepared with questions, and communicate in a timely and professional manner.

I have never been a formal mentor. What is expected of me?

There is an optional mentor training guide that will be available beginning late August.  Best practices in mentorship will be briefly outlined within the guide. In general, mentors should provide advice and guidance on college and career paths and be willing to share connections and networks.
