Baker School Launches Blog
The Howard H. Baker Jr. School of Public Policy and Public Affairs (Baker School) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is the first and only school of its kind in Tennessee. We’ve built a unique setting designed to prepare our students to serve as leaders of character and champions for the public good. We are launching this blog to chronicle our journey, share information about public policy and public affairs and explore industry topics and opportunities.
The Baker School’s mission is to Be Part of the Solution. It calls upon young people to tackle daunting issues in a civil, respectful, and collaborative manner. Our curriculum and programs are rooted in the legacy of Howard H. Baker Jr., Senate Majority Leader, White House chief of staff, and U.S. Ambassador to Japan, who was known for his integrity, his respect for opposing points of view, and his dedication to building consensus and strengthening our democracy. We will have features that dive into Senator Baker’s legacy, explaining why his mantras of “the other fellow might be right” and “the republic will survive” were important during his time but might be more imperative.
As a new school, we want to address all the questions that come with it to connect with current and potential students. This blog will share first-hand accounts of our student programs, such as the Washington Fellowship program or the Local Government Intern opportunities.
A lot goes into choosing a major; that’s why, within our blog, you will find in-depth looks at our major, minors, and certificates. We will detail the ten concentration options we have and how picking the right one can set you up for your post-graduation plans. And we won’t just be covering our undergraduate courses and programs; we will also highlight the Baker School’s graduate program and the opportunities secondary education can give you. Through this blog, you can imagine yourself as a Baker Student.
