The Baker Award for Public Service
The University of Tennessee’s Howard H. Baker School of Public Policy and Public Affairs is dedicated to building on Senator Baker’s commitment to public service and encouraging young people to be engaged in public service and the political process. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of his birth on November 15, 1925, the Baker School has established The Baker Award for Public Service, recognizing outstanding young national leaders whose actions and engagements reflect the values of Howard Baker. The recipient will receive a $25,000 prize. The inaugural Baker Award for Public Service will be awarded during the Baker School Gala in Knoxville on November 14, 2025.
The recipient of the Award will be an early career professional, younger than 40*, who, through their service as an elected official, or another public service position, demonstrates:
- The ability to find common ground and advance solutions to our most difficult challenges
- A commitment to working through America’s democratic institutions to institute change
- Respect for diverse perspectives and a commitment to civil discourse
Nominations will be accepted through September 1, 2025. The Baker Award for Public Service is administered by the Baker School Board of Directors, which includes Senator Baker’s children, individuals who worked with the Senator, higher education professionals, public servants, and distinguished philanthropists.
*The individual must be 40 or younger when the award is awarded.

Criteria and Eligibility

Nominations must include a completed form detailing the nominee’s public service impact, along with at least two recommendation letters and any supporting documents like awards or articles.
