Tiffany Barron

Assistant Professor, Institute of American Civics

PhD, Politics, Princeton University

Tiffany Barron is an assistant professor in the Howard H. Baker Jr. School of Public Policy and Public Affairs’ Institute of American Civics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She received her Ph.D. in politics at Princeton University in 2023.

Her research interests are at the intersection of international relations, comparative politics, and political theory. They include: revolutions and civil wars as responses to oppression, just war theory, and virtue ethics. She does qualitative and mixed methods research, with a regional focus on China. Her dissertation, “The Ethics of Revolt: Just War, Moral Agency, and Civil Conflict,” examines revolutions and civil wars from both normative and empirical perspectives, incorporating just war theory, virtue ethics, and a Bayesian analysis of case studies drawn from early 20th century China.

She received a Graduate School Teaching Award in 2022, and a Bradley Fellowship in 2020 and 2021. Prior to Princeton, she was a master’s student in the University of Chicago Committee on International Relations, where she graduated with honors. She received her B.A. with honors from Swarthmore College in 2013, with a major in political science and minor in Chinese.
